Announcing a new project!

Robert hoped we could work on a military type outfit 1870s-1880s.  He started with the look of a hat....

Scared the daylights out of me!

In some research on that I came across the North West Mounted Police, you know, The Canadian Mounties!!  Sargent Preston and his dog, King!  Ok, so you are not old enough to know about Sargent Preston.  Anyhow, Robert is a US citizen but hails from Canada.  I thought that would be so appropriate.  And he would make a very handsome Mountie.

Then we all started researching, and researching.  They were all over the map with their uniforms.  There were all sorts of variations.  Around the time of US Army's Battle of Big Horn in Montana, the Canadians decided they needed law on their wild lands but they wanted to look friendly toward the native people and NOT like Custer's US Army guys.  So, instead of dressing them in blue outfits they went for RED!  And Red stuck through the ages.  That is the only thing that stuck so we have lots of options.

So we are still working out the details but this is the base.

Reconstructing History has tons of patterns.  You can get them through the mail or print them from online.  I chose online.  This was the first time I have done this option.  The pattern is scaled and printed off on your printer and then you get to put it all together.  I found the easiest way was to tape it while on a window as a light box.   It took a bit of time but not really hard.  A patio window is the easiest because the size of the pattern paper is very large.

I ordered the fabric and it is on its way.  I also ordered some gold trim and some white cotton webbing.  We may or may not use the webbing look.

At certain points, for certain officer dress uniforms, the collar and the epaulets were blue with gold trim.  We may or may not use that idea.

They used a pill box hat and a pith helmet before settling on the familiar Canadian Mountie stetson hat.

This promises to be a fun project.  I've learned a lot already!
